For the visitor to Romania the absence of the Dacia Berlina will be felt as one of the most visible steps away from its communist past. July 2004 marked the end of its 35 year production run and, whilst they will continue to be seen for many years to come on Romania's roads I've no doubt, it seems impossible that no new Dacias are going to be built any more. For sure there are more important changes going on in Romania for better and for worse, but I will seriously miss this car. It will remain for me a symbol of Romanian ingenuity and creativity.

A grand total of 1,959,730 Dacias were built between August 1969 and July 2004, of which around 500,000 were exported for sale overseas. Based on the French Renault 12 as a result of a licensing contract signed with Renault in September 1966 (Peugeot, Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Austin also made a bid), the vast majority of these cars (over 1,700,000) were made in the Berlina saloon design. In 1973 the estate variant, the Dacia Break went into production, two years after its introduction in France.
